ABSTRACT
Weaving is an art that forms the most extensive and important part of Textile manufacturing by which threads of any substances are crossed and interlaced so as to be arranged into a perfectly expanded form. It can be done either manually with hand (which is slow and laborious) or mechanically with the aid of weaving machines known as looms (which is fast, proficient and produces quality fabric). Hence this study sort to design and construct two shaft loom at low cost for training and entrepreneurial practice of the students of Fine art and design to serve as a means of empowering them to bring about production of quality textile materials.
The constructed weaving loom was utilised to produce textile material while the study also explored the batik technique of fabric designing. The beautiful layers of colours with complex designs formed on batik clothing materials applied to the textile materials produced in the process of this study were used for sewing of gowns for exhibition. The gowns were made with the culture, the traditional attire and today’s trending fashion, to bring produce beautiful gowns that stand out in any event and occasion.
Seeing the low cost of production of these fabrics and how beautifully they could be designed to make clothes that showcases our culture in a unique and beautiful way could help increase patronage and promote use of these indigenous textile materials, generate income for the practitioners, increase export as well as the economy of the nation.
