" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">This research work examines the impact of the MDGs on Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria following

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">some progress on the achievement of the MDGs, given the modest recovery of the

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">Nigerian economy since the 1990s and the various efforts of all stakeholders.

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">Although, poverty was till pervasive, and child mortality and maternal health

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">still precarious, yet literacy level were rising, gender equality and

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">empowerment of women are improving. HIV/AIDs pandemic, malaria and other

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">communicable disease reducing. In all, the rate of achievement was slow in

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">Nigeria with incredible financial bases and capacity.  However, the constraint are many unemployment,

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">poor governance and implementation of programmes, corruption, inadequacy and

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">misapplication of fund, leading to lack of value for money. Others are poor

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">infrastructure to aid production and promote domestic trade, better

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">co-ordination of activities among the security problems in the treasure store

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">of Nigeria (the Niger-Delta). Although, Nigeria has made appreciable progress

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">on Goal 2 and 8, as well as some partial progress on Goal 3 and 6, but faces

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">serious challenges on Goal 4, 5 and 7 and some indicator of Goal 6. There is a

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">need to consolidate on area where progress has been made while concrete efforts

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">is required to get the country back on tract in the areas where it faces

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">serious challenges. This underscores the need to address implementation

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">bottlenecks and defect in current policies. It is pertinent to note that to

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">ignite the desire and irreversible progress towards attaining the MDGs targets

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">need coordinated efforts, and adequate funding and focused implementation.

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">However, more efforts are needed to capture relevant data on all activities

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">about the implementation of the MDGs from the three tiers of government

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">regularly, that way assessing the progress of MDGs will be more practical,

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">robust and total. Nevertheless, the secondary method of data collection and

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">evaluative method was employed in this research work especially data from the

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">National Planning Commission (NPC), Office of the Senior Special Assistant to

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">the President on MDGs (OSSAP), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and the United Nations

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">Development Programme (UNDP), textbooks, newspapers, internets etc. Finally,

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">government should provide opportunities for greater involvement of the private

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">sector, civil society organizations and development partners in the

" times="" new="" roman","serif";color:black;mso-themecolor:text1"="">implementation, monitoring and evaluation of MDGs – related projects
