HISTORY AND IMAGINATION IN OLA ROTIMI’S KURUNMI AND OVONRAMWEN NOGBAISI

ABSTRACT

   This work focuses on history and imagination as portrayed by Ola Rotimi’s Kurunmi and Ovonramwen Nogbaisi. This study shows how that history and imagination are woven to produce the two plays. Marxist theory is adopted in the study with the elements of Marxist theory that critically explains this work. 
Historical plays are stories based upon historical events and are based on actual persons and their deeds. Kurunmi and Ovonramwen Nogbaisi are plays in this mode.
   Imagination is the act of power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality. Ola Rotimi’s Kurunmi and Ovonramwen Nogbaisi are considered in the above light and studied to show how history and imagination are woven to produce these two historical play. Marxist theory is adopted in the study with the various Marxist elements that will help to critically explain this work. 
The plays depict what happened in Benin history and Ijaiye history and how Rotimi recreates history not only to make it relevant to the contemporary society but to re awaken the spirit of the past in the present in order to live through them again.
